We recently held a complimentary webinar discussing the upcoming changes to the Southwest Power Pool (SPP), the various data management challenges stemming from these changes, and how the ZEMA Suite is prepared to handle issues arising from the new Integrated Marketplace.
On March 1st, 2014, the SPP is going live with their Integrated Marketplace, which will include a number of new features, such as a Day-Ahead market, a market for Transmission Congestion Rights (TCRs) and a single Balancing Authority. The Day-Ahead market will run alongside the existing real-time balancing market, and will ensure a more cost-effective and reliable allocation of energy. TCRs are financial instruments-similar to Congestion Revenue Rights or Financial Transmission Rights in other ISOs- used to hedge against the costly risks of congestion. Finally, the 16 existing balancing authorities will be consolidated into a single centralized authority in charge of balancing the region’s supply and demand for electricity, and facilitating unit commitment from market participants (www.spp.org).
Data Challenges and the ZEMA Solution
Our webinar provided an in-depth examination of the data management challenges that these changes will create; for example, the SPP will soon be generating raw data from over 670 nodes every five minutes in XML, HTML and FTP formats, published from behind certificates and public sources like the Integrated Marketplace Portal (https://marketplace.spp.org/). Collecting, validating and connecting such a high volume of data with internal databases can be a daunting and time-consuming manual task, while analyzing and comparing data from different sources and with varying granularities can present added complications.
The ZEMA Suite is designed to help users manage these problems. By automating the collection and validation processes, ZEMA ensures that data is imported accurately, consistently and on time. ZEMA further allows users to manage the collection scheduling as well as the access entitlements to data, reports and software of the organization’s users.
ZEMA facilitates the analysis of data published from disparate sources with varying timescales or measurement units. Data can be aggregated, aligned and filtered in virtually any way to allow for historical and future analysis. Our webinar focused on a few of the options available in ZEMA, producing the following graphs.
We also touched on the integration possibilities of ZEMA, by demonstrating the Data Direct Add-in for Microsoft Excel; in addition, ZEMA is capable of integrating with many more downstream systems, including settlement systems, BI tools, Trade and Risk managers, and many more. Live data feeds can be pushed automatically to these systems to provide an efficient and cost-effective integration process.
